Your English Can Open the Door to a Year in Spain

If you speak English well, you could spend a school year in Spain helping students learn your language. Through the Auxiliares de Conversación program, language assistants help teachers with conversation and pronunciation practice and share the culture of their home country. For 2026-2027, the program runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 May 2027. It is a great way to live in Spain, improve your Spanish and gain classroom experience, but it is short-term and does not lead to permanent residence.

Who Can Apply and What You Get

You must be a citizen of a country with an agreement with Spain, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, India or the Philippines. You also need a university degree, or to be at least a second-year university student. New applicants must be at least 18 and under 45. Applicants from some countries must also prove C2-level English. Assistants receive €800 a month for 14 hours of classroom work a week, and some regions offer up to 16 hours with higher pay. Non-EU assistants without a European health card also get health insurance through the program.

How to Apply Step by Step

First, check that your country is on the official list and that you meet the education and age rules. Next, prepare your documents: a health statement, a signed declaration, a motivation letter, a recommendation letter and a certificate showing no sexual offence record. The 2026-2027 application window closed on 30 June 2026, so check the ministry’s page for the next call. The education authorities assign you to a school, and you usually cannot choose it. After acceptance, apply for the visa that matches your nationality, and bring enough savings, because your first payment may not arrive until late December.
