What the Spain Digital Nomad Visa Is

Spain’s digital nomad visa, officially the visa for international teleworkers, lets non-EU professionals live in Spain while working remotely for companies outside the country. It is for employees, freelancers and self-employed people who already earn their income online. It is not a general work permit for Spanish employers. EU citizens do not need it.

Income, Degree and Experience Requirements

You need either a university degree or at least three years of professional experience. You must also show enough income to support yourself. In 2026, the minimum was about €2,442 per month for a single applicant, with extra amounts for each family member. This figure changes regularly, so confirm it with your consulate.

Remote Work Rules for Employees and Freelancers

If you are an employee, your company must be located outside Spain and must confirm in writing that you can work remotely. If you are self-employed, work for Spanish clients cannot be more than 20% of your total activity. Work for individuals, government agencies, universities or non-profits is not covered. If most of your income comes from Spain, this visa is probably not the right route.

Steps to Apply for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa

First, check that you meet the degree or experience rule and the income level. Next, gather your documents, including proof of remote work, a criminal background check, and health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain. Freelancers also need proof of at least one year of company activity. Then apply at the Spanish consulate or official visa centre that serves your place of residence, and follow its own checklist and fees.

Visa Length and Family Members

A visa issued from abroad is valid for up to one year. Before it expires, you can apply for a residence authorization in Spain, which can then be renewed. Your spouse or partner and dependent children can usually apply with you. Approval depends on your complete file and is never guaranteed.

Can You Apply From Inside Spain?

Yes, in some cases. If you are already legally in Spain, you may apply for a telework residence authorisation of up to three years. Your current status decides whether you are eligible.

Which Health Insurance Is Accepted?

You need private health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain. It must have no co-payments or coverage limits, and travel insurance is not accepted.

How Long Does a Decision Take?

Usually about 10 days after your file is forwarded. Extra documents or an interview can make it take longer.
