What a Denmark Tourist Visa Lets You Do

From the colourful houses of Copenhagen to castles, beaches and the home of LEGO, Denmark is a favourite destination for many travellers. Denmark is part of the Schengen area, so most visitors who need a visa apply for a Schengen visa. This visa lets you stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period, and you can usually travel to other Schengen countries during that time. It is for tourism, family visits and short business trips, but it does not allow you to work or live in Denmark.

Who Needs a Visa for Denmark

Citizens of EU and EEA countries don’t need a visa to visit Denmark. Citizens of some other countries can also visit for up to 90 days without a visa, while many others must apply for a Schengen visa before they travel. If you plan to visit several Schengen countries, apply to Denmark only if it is your main destination. Check the rules for your nationality on the official website of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Documents You Need

You usually need a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months after you return, the cover letter from your online application, and a recent photo. You also need travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 in coverage, valid in all Schengen countries. You must also show that you have enough money for your trip, plus flight bookings, your accommodation plans and proof of ties to your home country, such as a job or studies. If you are visiting family or friends, your host can fill in an online invitation form from the Danish Immigration Service, which is recommended but not required.

How to Apply Step by Step

First, fill in your visa application and pay the fee online on the official ApplyVisa.um.dk website. The fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, and visa centres may also charge a small service fee. Next, print and sign the cover letter, and book an appointment at the Danish embassy, consulate or visa centre in your country. On the day of your appointment, hand in your documents and give your fingerprints and photo. Apply at least 15 days before your trip, and earlier during busy travel seasons.

If Your Visa Is Refused

Common reasons for refusal include missing documents, not enough money for the trip, an unclear purpose of travel, or doubts that you will return home. If your visa is refused, you receive a letter that explains the reasons. You can appeal the decision, or apply again later with stronger documents. Read the refusal reasons carefully, and fix them before you apply again.

Does Your Host in Denmark Need to Send an Invitation?

It is recommended but not required. Your host can fill in the online invitation form, and you add the Invitation ID to your visa application.

Can You Visit Other Schengen Countries With a Danish Visa?

Yes, in most cases. Your total stay in the Schengen area must not be more than 90 days within any 180 days.

Is the Visa Fee Refunded If You Are Refused?

No. The visa fee is not refunded, even if your visa is refused. Make sure your application is complete before you pay.
