Denmark Work Visa for Electricians, Plumbers, Welders
Last updated
Your Trade Skills Are in Demand in Denmark
Denmark is short of skilled tradespeople, and many of them can get a work permit through the Positive List for Skilled Work. The list includes electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, bricklayers, mechanics, industrial and electronics technicians, and even bakers and butchers. Unlike most European work visas, you don’t need a university degree: your vocational training and trade skills are what count. With Danish pay, a 37-hour working week and a strong work-life balance, it is one of the best places in Europe to work in a trade.
What You Need to Qualify
You need a job offer from a Danish employer in a job title that is on the Positive List for Skilled Work, and relevant vocational training for that job. Your salary must match what a skilled worker in Denmark earns at your level of experience, based on official Danish wage statistics. Some trades, such as certain electrical and plumbing work, may also need Danish authorisation or official recognition of your qualifications, so check this early. The list changes on 1 January and 1 July each year, and the application fee is DKK 6,810.
How to Find a Job and Apply, Step by Step
First, check that your exact job title is on the current Positive List for Skilled Work on the official SIRI website. Next, search for jobs on Workindenmark’s Job Search in Denmark and EURES, using Danish and English terms like “Elektriker”, “VVS-montør” (plumber), “Svejser” (welder), “Tømrer” (carpenter) or “Electrician Denmark”. When you get an offer, your employer and you each fill in your parts of the online application, after creating a case order ID and paying the fee on the SIRI website. Finally, give your photo and fingerprints within 14 days of applying, and wait for your permit before you start work. Emig can also help you improve your CV and prepare stronger job applications.
What If My Job Is Removed From the List Later?
You can usually still renew your permit. If your job is removed from the list after you get your permit, you can keep extending it as long as you meet the general conditions.
Can Your Family Come With You?
In most cases, yes. Your spouse or partner and children under 18 living at home can usually apply to live with you in Denmark.
