Netherlands Work Visa for Software Developers

The Netherlands Needs Developers Like You

The Netherlands runs one of Europe’s most accessible routes for tech talent: the highly skilled migrant permit. If you have 3 to 5 years of relevant experience, a strong portfolio, and solid English, you’re already close to qualifying — no mandatory Dutch language test, no rigid embassy process. What matters most is a real job offer from a company registered as a recognised sponsor with Dutch immigration, paying at least the required salary for your age. This is a practical, well-used path, not a long shot — thousands of developers move through it every year.

These Are the Core Requirements You Need

Your employer must carry recognised sponsor status with the IND, and your contract must meet the 2026 salary floor: EUR 4,357 a month if you’re under 30, or EUR 5,942 if you’re 30 or older. A lower EUR 3,122 rate applies for recent graduates and orientation-year holders. Alongside this, you’ll need at least 3 to 5 years of hands-on development experience and a portfolio that backs it up — your GitHub, past projects, or shipped work all count. There’s no mandatory language exam for this permit, though employers naturally expect you to work comfortably in English day to day.

Your Application Moves in Clear Steps

Start with a clean résumé and a technical portfolio ready to share, then search specialist platforms like LinkedIn, Honeypot, and Relocate.me, narrowing your focus to companies on the IND’s sponsor list. Dutch hiring typically runs through 3 to 5 rounds: an HR screening, a technical interview, a coding challenge or take-home project, and a final conversation with senior staff on team fit. Once you accept an offer and sign your contract, the company’s legal team files your documents with Dutch immigration — a step that usually takes 2 to 6 weeks and is entirely out of your hands. When immigration confirms your salary and paperwork, they send approval to both your employer and the Dutch embassy. From there, you visit the embassy with your identity documents to collect your entry visa and prepare to relocate.

Can Your Family Come With You?

Yes — your employer can apply for your partner and children at the same time as your own application. Family members have their own requirements and fees, so it’s worth reviewing the IND’s family guidance for your specific situation. Applying together from the start keeps the whole move simpler than applying separately later.

How Long Can You Stay, and Can You Get Permanent Residence?

Your permit runs for the length of your contract, up to 5 years. After 5 years, you may be able to apply for permanent residence if you meet the requirements, including a civic integration exam. A permit on its own doesn’t guarantee permanent residence, so it’s worth planning your integration steps well before that 5-year mark arrives.
