Italy Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers
Last updated
Live in Italy and Keep Your Remote Career
Imagine working on your laptop from a café in Rome or a seaside town in Sicily, while keeping your clients or your current job. Italy’s digital nomad visa makes this possible for skilled professionals from outside the EU. It is open to both freelancers and employees who can work fully remotely for clients or companies outside Italy. The permit is valid for one year and can be renewed in Italy as long as you keep your remote work, housing and insurance.
Who Can Apply for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa
This visa is only for highly skilled workers. You need a recognised university degree, a licensed profession, or a higher professional qualification with at least five years of experience, or three years for IT specialists. You also need at least six months of remote work experience and a yearly income of about €28,000 from your own work. Passive income such as rent or investments does not count. You also need health insurance of at least €30,000 and a registered rental contract in Italy in your own name. Remote employees must also show a salary at or above Italy’s average and a letter from their employer.
How to Apply Step by Step
First, gather proof of your income, such as tax returns, pay slips or bank statements, and contracts or invoices showing six months of remote work. Next, get your degree recognised with a Declaration of Value, buy qualifying health insurance, and sign a rental contract registered with the Italian Tax Agency. Then book an appointment at the Italian consulate that covers where you live, and submit your full application. Within eight working days of arriving in Italy, apply for your residence permit at the local police headquarters (Questura).
What Are the Benefits of the Italy Digital Nomad Visa?
You can live in Italy while keeping your current job or clients abroad, with no Italian employer needed. Your permit can be renewed every year if you still meet the conditions. Once in Italy, you can also bring your spouse and children under 18.
What Documents Do You Need?
You usually need a passport, the national visa form, a photo, health insurance, a registered rental contract, proof of income, proof of qualifications and proof of six months of remote work. Remote employees also need their employment contract and an employer letter. Always check the full list on the website of the Italian consulate that serves your area.
