Germany Blue Card for IT Specialists

Last updated

Your IT Skills May Open the Door to Germany

Germany offers the EU Blue Card for skilled professionals with a recognised university-level qualification and a concrete job offer. For IT specialists, there is also a route for people who do not have a degree but have strong professional experience. If you work as a software developer, systems administrator, data specialist, or in a similar IT role, you can check whether your profile fits. The card is issued for the length of your employment contract plus three months, up to a maximum of four years.

Salary and Qualification Requirements

You generally need an academic or comparable tertiary qualification of at least three years and a specific job offer in Germany lasting at least six months that matches your qualification. In 2026, the standard Blue Card requires a gross annual salary of at least €50,700 without Federal Employment Agency approval. For IT professionals, a lower threshold of €45,934.20 applies, but the Federal Employment Agency must approve it. IT specialists without a degree may also qualify if they have at least three of the past seven years of IT experience at university level and a matching job offer. These amounts are adjusted every year, so verify the latest figures before you apply.

How to Find an IT Job in Germany

Most applicants need a job offer before the Blue Card can be issued, so your job search is the key step. Start with the Federal Employment Agency job search, then also check company career pages and professional networks. Search for terms such as Softwareentwickler, Software Developer visa sponsorship, and IT-Fachkraft. Read each listing carefully and confirm that the employer is open to hiring applicants from abroad. Ask early whether the employer will support the Blue Card process and meet the salary requirement. Emig can also help you identify relevant opportunities, improve your resume, and prepare stronger job applications.

How Soon Can You Settle Permanently?

Blue Card holders may be able to obtain a settlement permit after 27 months with German at level A1, or after 21 months with German at level B1. These timelines depend on meeting all conditions, including continuous qualifying employment. Check the current rules with your local foreigners authority.

Can Your Family Join You in Germany?

Family reunification is possible for Blue Card holders. In general, spouses, registered partners, and underage unmarried children may be able to join, but different rules apply depending on the family member. Non-EU spouses usually need a residence permit for family reunification, and requirements such as health insurance and financial resources may apply. Confirm the details with the German mission in your country.
