What the Germany Opportunity Card Allows

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) allows qualified skilled workers from non-EU countries to enter Germany and look for a job without already having a job offer. It is initially issued for a maximum of one year. The card is a job search permit and does not guarantee that you will find employment. It suits people who have no qualified job offer yet and are not applying for a university place or vocational training, since those routes require separate visas.

Two Ways to Qualify: Recognised Skills or Points

There are two main pathways. If your foreign degree or professional training took at least two years and is fully recognised in Germany, you can apply as a skilled professional without using the points system. If your qualification is not yet fully recognised or comparable, you need at least six points in the points system, which can reward factors such as qualifications, work experience, and language skills. Check your points with the official Make it in Germany self-check before you apply. Regulated professions such as medicine, nursing, and teaching also require a licence to practise in Germany.

Language, Funds, and Health Insurance

For the points-based route you need at least basic German at level A1 or English at level B2. You must also show that you can support yourself, for example with a blocked account of at least €1,091 per month (€13,092 in total), a formal declaration of commitment, or a part-time work contract of up to 20 hours per week with a minimum net pay of €1,091 per month. Health insurance at the level of German statutory insurance is required as well. These amounts can change, so verify them on the official pages before you apply.

Steps to Apply for the Opportunity Card

First, confirm whether you qualify as a recognised skilled professional or through the points system. Next, gather your passport, proof of qualification, proof of language skills, proof of funds, and health insurance. From 1 October 2026, applications must be submitted online through the Consular Services Portal, with appointments handled by TLScontact. Most applications are typically processed within two to three weeks after biometrics are provided. Processing times and fees vary by location, so check the website of your German mission.

Working While You Search and What Comes Next

While you search, you may hold one or more part-time jobs of up to 20 hours per week in total, and you may do trial jobs of up to two weeks per employer. If you find a qualified job, you can apply for a residence permit for qualified employment or an EU Blue Card, and you should file that application before your opportunity card expires. Learning German, even beyond the minimum level, can noticeably improve your job prospects. Free or state-funded language courses may be available in some regions, so ask your local employment agency.

Which Documents Should You Prepare?
  • A valid passport

  • Proof of your qualification and, if applicable, a recognition notice

  • Proof of German at A1 or English at B2 for the points route

  • Proof of the points criteria you are claiming

  • Proof of funds, such as a blocked account

  • Proof of health insurance

Requirements can differ by country, so verify the exact checklist with your German mission.

Can You Work on an Opportunity Card?

Yes, within limits. You may work part-time for up to 20 hours per week and complete job trials of up to two weeks per employer. Full-time employment is generally only possible after you change to a residence permit for qualified employment. Check your card conditions before accepting any job.

What Happens If You Find a Job?

If you receive a qualified job offer, you can apply for a residence permit for qualified employment or an EU Blue Card, depending on your qualification and salary. Apply before your opportunity card expires. Your employer may also need to meet certain conditions, so confirm the details with the local foreigners authority.
