What a US Tourist Visa Lets You Do

Whether you dream of seeing New York, the Grand Canyon or family in California, most travellers need a visitor visa to enter the United States. The tourist visa, called a B-2 visa, is for holidays, visiting friends or relatives, and medical treatment, and it is often issued together with the business visa as a B-1/B-2 visa. You cannot work or study on a tourist visa, and travelling mainly to give birth in the US is not allowed. It is meant only for short, temporary visits.

Who Needs a US Tourist Visa

Most travellers need a visitor visa to visit the United States. Citizens of countries in the Visa Waiver Program can usually visit for up to 90 days without a visa, using an online approval called ESTA. Citizens of Canada and Bermuda generally don’t need a visa for tourism. Some nationalities face extra rules, such as travel restrictions or visa bonds, so always check the current rules for your country before you apply.

What Officers Look For

US law presumes that every visitor plans to stay in the United States permanently. To get a visa, you must prove the opposite: that your trip is temporary and that you will go home. The officer looks closely at your ties to your home country, such as your job, family, property and studies, and at whether you can pay for your trip. You don’t need an invitation letter, but a clear, honest travel plan makes a big difference.

How to Apply Step by Step

First, fill out the online visa application, Form DS-160, and print the confirmation page. Next, pay the visa fee and book an interview at the US embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or residence. Most applicants now need an in-person interview, because interview waivers are very limited. On the day of your interview, bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation page, fee receipt, a photo, and documents that show your ties and finances. Your answers must match what you wrote in your DS-160.

Fees, Validity and How Long You Can Stay

The visa application fee is US $185, and some nationalities also pay an extra issuance fee if the visa is approved. A new $250 visa integrity fee has been passed into law, but it is not being collected yet, so check the official fee page before you apply. Your visa may be valid for several years, but the officer at the US border decides how long you can stay on each visit, often up to six months. How long your visa is valid also depends on your nationality.

Do You Need an Invitation Letter for a US Tourist Visa?

No. The US State Department says an invitation letter is not needed. Strong proof of your ties and finances matters much more.

Can You Work or Study on a US Tourist Visa?

No. A tourist visa does not allow any work or study for credit. You need a different visa, such as a student or work visa.

What If Your Tourist Visa Is Refused?

Most refusals happen because the officer is not convinced you will return home. You can apply again, but only after your situation has clearly changed, such as a new job or stronger family ties.
