Australia Still Needs Skilled Workers
Australia publishes an official list every year showing which jobs employers are struggling to fill. In the latest list, released in October 2026, 279 of 1,021 jobs, or 27%, were in shortage across the country. That is lower than the peak of 36% in 2023, but it still means thousands of employers are looking for skilled workers. If your job is on this list, you may have a real advantage when you plan your move.
Trades and Technical Jobs
Trades are the biggest shortage area in Australia, with almost half of all trade and technician jobs in shortage. In-demand trades include electricians, plumbers, carpenters, mechanics, chefs and cooks. Many trade jobs have been in shortage for years, which makes them some of the most reliable options for skilled migrants. Some trades, such as electrical work and plumbing, also need a local licence before you can work.
Healthcare and Care Jobs
Healthcare is another major shortage area, especially for registered nurses in fields like aged care, surgery and children’s health. General practitioners, psychologists, and aged care and disability workers are also in high demand. Health professionals usually need to register with Australia’s national health regulator before they can work. Demand for care workers is also expected to stay strong as Australia’s population gets older.
Engineering, Teaching and Other Professions
Around 37% of professional jobs are in shortage, including civil, electrical and mechanical engineers. In education, early childhood and secondary school teachers are still in demand in most states. The list also changes each year: for example, software engineers, accountants and primary school teachers were no longer in national shortage in 2026. This is why it’s important to check the latest list, not old articles.
How to Check If Your Job Is in Demand
Search for your job on the official Occupation Shortage List published by Jobs and Skills Australia. Then check whether it is also on the Home Affairs skilled occupation lists, because those decide which visas you can apply for. A job can be in shortage but still not be eligible for a visa, so you need to check both lists. Some jobs are only in shortage in regional areas, which can open extra options outside the big cities.
Does a Job in Shortage Guarantee a Visa?
No. A shortage job can help, but you still need to meet the visa rules. This includes a skills assessment, English test and health and character checks.
Are There More Jobs in Regional Australia?
Sometimes, yes. In 2026, 15 jobs were in shortage in regional areas but not in capital cities. Regional areas can also offer special visa options for skilled workers.
How Often Does the Shortage List Change?
It is updated every year, usually in October. Always check the latest version before you plan your move.
