The Skilled Worker Visa and Its Main Benefits
“Skilled worker visa” is not one single visa. It is the everyday name for three Australian visas that use a points-based system: subclasses 189, 190 and 491. Australia uses these visas to attract skilled people whose education and work experience meet the country’s needs. You do not need a job offer or an employer to sponsor you for the Skilled Independent Visa 189, although you must meet the eligibility requirements and receive an invitation to apply. With the Skilled Independent Visa 189 or the Skilled Nominated Visa 190, successful applicants can obtain permanent residence, with the right to work and study and access to Medicare if eligible. Your partner and dependent children can generally be included in the same application, subject to the visa requirements.
Requirements and How the Points Work
To apply, you must be under 45 when you are invited, and your job must be on the occupation list for your visa. An approved Australian body must check your degree and work experience and give you a positive skills assessment. You also need at least “competent” English, such as a 6 in every part of the International English Language Testing System exam. On top of these, you need at least 65 points, and the more points you have, the better your chance of being invited. Points come from your age (up to 30 points for ages 25 to 32), your English (10 extra for proficient, 20 for superior), your work experience (up to 20), and your education (20 for a doctorate, 15 for a bachelor’s or master’s degree). You can earn extra points for studying in Australia, a partner with skills or English, or being single, and a state or regional sponsor adds 5 or 15 points.
The Three Visas and How They Differ
The 189 is the most independent option: no state or family sponsor is needed, and you can live and work anywhere in Australia. Because of that freedom, competition is strong, and people with higher scores are usually invited first. The 190 needs an Australian state or territory to nominate you, which adds 5 points, and you are expected to live and work in that state for your first years. The 491 is a five-year visa sponsored by a state or by an eligible relative living in a regional area, and it adds 15 points. The 491 can lead to permanent residence after three years of living and working in regional Australia, through a separate permanent visa called subclass 191.
How to Apply Step by Step
First, choose the occupation that matches your degree and experience, then apply for a skills assessment with the body responsible for that job. Next, take an approved English test at a test centre, because online tests taken at home are not accepted. Then create a free Expression of Interest in SkillSelect, the Australian government’s online system, which stays active for up to two years. For the 189, you simply wait for an invitation, but for the 190 and 491 you must also apply to a state, or arrange a relative’s sponsorship for the 491. Once invited, you have 60 days to submit your full visa application online, with your documents, health checks and police certificates.
Jobs That Qualify for Skilled Visas
Each visa uses its own occupation list, so your job decides which visas are open to you. The 189 uses the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, which mainly covers jobs Australia needs over many years. The 190 and 491 can also use the Short-term Skilled Occupation List and the Regional Occupation List, and each state publishes its own list of jobs it wants. Jobs in health, engineering, information technology, teaching and skilled trades often appear on these lists. Since the lists are updated regularly, always check the latest official list for your job before paying for a skills assessment.
Can I apply from outside Australia?
Yes, you can be inside or outside Australia when you create your Expression of Interest and when you apply. Many successful applicants complete the whole process from their home country.
Do I need a job offer?
No, these three visas do not need an employer to sponsor you. Your score comes from your age, English, education and work experience. This is why many people choose skilled visas over employer-sponsored ones.
Is the points test changing in 2027?
The Australian government has confirmed it will redesign the points test, and 1 July 2027 has been mentioned as a possible start date. No new rules are law yet, so the 65-point pass mark still applies. Starting your skills assessment and English test now keeps you ready, whichever rules apply.
