What an Australia Visitor Visa Lets You Do

From the Sydney Opera House to the Great Barrier Reef, Australia is on many travellers’ dream lists. The Visitor visa, called Subclass 600, lets you come to Australia for holidays, to visit family and friends, or for short business trips like meetings and conferences. You cannot work in Australia on a visitor visa, but you can study or train for up to three months. It is meant only for short, temporary visits.

Which Visa You Need: Visitor Visa, ETA or eVisitor

Your passport decides which option you can use. Citizens of countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan and Singapore can usually apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which costs AUD 20 through the official app. Citizens of most European Union countries and the United Kingdom can usually apply for an eVisitor, which is free. Both allow stays of up to three months per visit. If your passport is not eligible for these, as with passports from countries such as India, China and the Philippines, or if you want to stay longer than three months, you need the Subclass 600 Visitor visa. You can check the full list of eligible passports on the official ETA and eVisitor pages of the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

Requirements for an Australia Visitor Visa

The most important requirement is to show that you are a genuine visitor who will leave Australia at the end of your trip. Officers look at your ties to your home country, such as your job, family, property or studies, and your travel history. You must also show that you have enough money to pay for your trip, or that someone in Australia will support you. You must also meet health and character requirements, and some applicants may need a health check.

How to Apply Step by Step

First, create an ImmiAccount on the Home Affairs website and choose the right stream, such as the Tourist stream for holidays or the Business Visitor stream for meetings. Next, upload your documents, including your passport, proof of funds, proof of your job or studies, and a short travel plan. Then pay the fee, which is AUD 250 for the Tourist stream if you apply outside Australia. Some applicants also need to give biometrics, so follow the instructions you receive after applying. Apply well before your trip, because processing times vary.

How Long You Can Stay

The officer decides how long you can stay. Most Tourist stream visas allow stays of three months, and stays of up to 12 months are possible in some cases. Some visas include a “No Further Stay” condition, which means you cannot apply for most other visas while you are in Australia. Always check the conditions on your visa grant letter before you travel.

Can You Extend Your Visitor Visa Inside Australia?

Sometimes, by applying for a new visitor visa before your current one ends. This costs more, about AUD 630, and is not possible if your visa has a “No Further Stay” condition.

Can Family in Australia Sponsor Your Visit?

Yes. A family member who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor you through the Sponsored Family stream. In some cases, they may need to pay a security bond, which is returned if you follow your visa rules.

What If Your Visitor Visa Is Refused?

Most refusals happen because the officer is not convinced you are a genuine visitor. Before you apply again, strengthen your proof of ties to your home country and your travel plan.
