Why Choosing the Right Australian Visa Matters
Australia attracts visitors, students and skilled workers from all over the world with its strong economy, top universities and great quality of life. But each goal needs a different visa, and choosing the wrong one can cost you time, money and even future options. Australian visas fall into two big groups: temporary visas for visiting, studying or working for a while, and permanent visas for making Australia your home. Knowing where you fit is the first step to a successful application.
Visiting Australia: Visitor Visa, ETA and eVisitor
If you want to travel, visit family or attend short business meetings, you usually need a Visitor visa, called Subclass 600. Citizens of some countries can use a quicker online option instead, such as an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or an eVisitor, for stays of up to three months. A visitor visa does not allow you to work in Australia, but you can study for up to three months. Your passport decides which option you can use.
Studying in Australia: Student Visa
If you want to study at an Australian school, college or university, you need a Student visa, called Subclass 500. You need an offer from an approved school, health insurance for students, enough money for your stay, and proof that you are a genuine student. Students can usually work up to 48 hours every two weeks during their course, and unlimited hours during breaks. Since October 2026, most people must apply for this visa from outside Australia.
Working in Australia: Work and Skilled Visas
Australia has several ways to work in the country. With a job offer, an employer can sponsor you through the Skills in Demand visa. Skilled workers can also apply for permanent visas through a points system, either on their own, with a state nomination, or by living in a regional area. Young people from some countries can work and travel for a year or more with a Working Holiday visa, and recent graduates can stay to work with a Temporary Graduate visa.
Living in Australia Permanently and With Family
Permanent residence lets you live, work and study in Australia without time limits, and later apply for citizenship. The main paths are skilled visas, employer-sponsored visas and family visas. Australian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their partner to live with them through a Partner visa. Each path has its own rules, so choose the one that matches your skills, job and family situation.
Can You Change From a Visitor Visa to Another Visa Inside Australia?
Often not. Many visitor visas include a “No Further Stay” condition, and most people must now apply for a student visa from overseas. It is usually safer to apply for the right visa before you travel.
Do You Need a Job Offer to Move to Australia?
Not always. Some skilled visas use a points system and don’t need an employer. But employer-sponsored visas, like the Skills in Demand visa, do need a job offer.
How Do You Apply for an Australian Visa?
Most applications are made online through an ImmiAccount on the Home Affairs website. Use the official Visa Finder tool to see which visas fit your plans.
