Work in New Zealand as a Construction Worker

Last updated

New Zealand’s Construction Boom Needs Skilled Hands

If you have real experience on construction sites, New Zealand wants you. The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) lets you work full-time for an employer Immigration New Zealand has approved, in roles like site supervision, plumbing, electrical work, crane operation, or earthmoving. Some of these roles also sit on the Green List, opening a path toward residence depending on your exact job, qualifications, and registration. The visa fee starts from NZD $1,540, and most applications move fast. This is a real, active route into one of New Zealand’s most in-demand industries — not a long shot.

What You Need to Qualify

Your job offer must be full-time (at least 30 hours a week), come from an accredited employer with an approved job check, and pay at least the required wage for the role. You need either 2 or more years of relevant work experience or a Level 4+ qualification on New Zealand’s qualifications framework in the same field. Your experience must be backed by real evidence — payslips or tax certificates, not just a CV. You’ll also need good health, good character, genuine intentions, and any registration the job requires; English may be required depending on the job’s skill level. Visas run up to 5 years for higher-skilled roles, or up to 3 years for roles at skill level 4 or 5.

Your Action Plan

Search the official Accredited Employer list to confirm a company can sponsor you — if you can’t find them, ask directly. Search job boards like Trade Me Jobs for roles such as Carpenter, Site Supervisor, Plumber, Electrician, or Crane Operator, and confirm each employer accepts applicants from outside New Zealand. Gather your evidence — payslips, tax records, references, and qualification certificates — in advance. Once the employer’s job check is approved, they’ll send you the online application link. If residence is your goal, check Green List roles early, since roles like plumber and electrician generally need 24 months of New Zealand work first.

Can Your Family Come With You?

Your partner may be able to get an open work visa, but this depends on your pay — partners of workers paid below the median wage (NZD $35/hour), which includes many skill level 4–5 construction roles, face restricted or no work rights. Dependent children can usually join you for schooling. Check your exact job’s pay level before counting on open work rights for your partner.

Can This Visa Lead to Residence?

Some construction trades, like plumber and electrician, sit on the Green List’s Work to Residence tier — meaning after about 24 months of qualifying New Zealand work, meeting pay and registration requirements, you can apply for residence. Not every construction role qualifies, so confirm your specific occupation on the Green List before planning around it.
