What a Switzerland Tourist Visa Lets You Do
From the Swiss Alps to Lake Geneva, Switzerland is a dream destination for many travellers. Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, so most visitors who need a visa apply for a Schengen visa, also called a type C visa. This visa lets you stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period, and you can also travel to other Schengen countries during that time. It is for tourism, family visits and short business trips, but it does not allow you to work.
Who Needs a Visa for Switzerland
Citizens of EU and EFTA countries don’t need a visa to visit Switzerland. Citizens of some other countries can also visit for up to 90 days without a visa, while many others must apply for a Schengen visa before travelling. If you are visiting several Schengen countries, apply to Switzerland only if it is your main destination. Check the official entry rules for your nationality on the website of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).
Documents You Need
You usually need a valid passport, a completed visa application form, a recent passport photo, and proof of where you will stay. You also need proof that you can pay for your trip, such as bank statements, and proof of your ties to your home country, such as a job or studies. You must also have travel medical insurance that covers at least EUR 30,000 and is valid in all Schengen countries. If you are visiting family or friends, they can also send you a letter of invitation.
How to Apply Step by Step
First, fill in the online visa application form on the official Swiss visa portal, swiss-visa.ch, and book an appointment. Next, attend your appointment at the Swiss embassy, consulate or visa centre, give your fingerprints if needed, and pay the visa fee of EUR 90 for adults or EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12. Apply at least 15 days before your trip, and no earlier than six months before. A decision is usually made within 15 days, but some nationalities need extra checks that can take up to 14 more days.
If Your Visa Is Refused
Common reasons for refusal include missing documents, not enough money for the trip, an unclear travel purpose, or doubts that you will return home. If your visa is refused, you receive a standard form that explains the reasons. You have the right to appeal within 30 days of receiving the refusal. You can also apply again later with stronger documents.
Can You Visit Other Schengen Countries With a Swiss Visa?
Yes. A Swiss Schengen visa lets you travel to other Schengen countries. Your total stay in the Schengen area must not be more than 90 days within any 180 days.
Do You Need an Invitation Letter?
Not always, but it helps if you are visiting family or friends. Your host in Switzerland can also sign a declaration promising to cover your costs if needed.
Is the Visa Fee Refunded If You Are Refused?
No. The visa fee is paid for processing your application. It is not refunded if your visa is refused, so make sure your application is complete.
