What a Norway Tourist Visa Lets You Do

From the fjords and the northern lights to Oslo and the Arctic, Norway is on many travellers’ wish lists. Norway is part of the Schengen area, so most visitors who need a visa apply for a Schengen visa. This visa lets you stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period, and you can also travel to other Schengen countries during that time. It is for tourism, family visits and short business trips, but it does not allow you to work or study for a full degree.

Who Needs a Visa for Norway

Citizens of EU and EEA countries don’t need a visa to visit Norway. Citizens of some other countries can also visit for up to 90 days without a visa, while many others must apply for a Schengen visa before they travel. If you are visiting several Schengen countries, apply to Norway only if it is your main destination. Check the rules for your nationality on the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI).

Documents You Need

You usually need a valid passport, the application form from the UDI portal, a recent photo, a return ticket, and proof of your accommodation and money for the trip. You also need travel medical insurance that covers at least EUR 30,000 and is valid in all Schengen countries for your whole trip. If you are visiting family or friends in Norway, you must also include a written invitation from your host, and proof of your relationship if you are visiting family. Proof of your job, studies or other ties to your home country also makes your application stronger.

How to Apply Step by Step

First, register your application on the UDI online application portal and pay the visa fee of EUR 90 for adults, with a lower fee for children. Next, print and sign the cover letter and application form, and book an appointment at the Norwegian embassy or visa application centre in your country. On the day of your appointment, hand in your documents and give your fingerprints and photo. Apply well before your trip, because processing times vary by country.

If Your Visa Is Refused

Common reasons for refusal include missing documents, not enough money for the trip, an unclear purpose, or doubts that you will return home. If your visa is refused, you receive a letter explaining the reasons. You can appeal the decision, or apply again later with stronger documents. Read the refusal reasons carefully before you decide what to do next.

How Does Your Host Send an Invitation?

Your host in Norway can fill out UDI’s sponsorship and invitation form online with their electronic ID, or use the paper form. The invitation should explain who you are, why you are visiting and who will pay for the trip.

Can You Visit Other Schengen Countries With a Norway Visa?

Yes. A Norwegian Schengen visa lets you travel to other Schengen countries. Your total stay in the Schengen area must not be more than 90 days within any 180 days.

Is the Visa Fee Refunded If You Are Refused?

No. The visa fee is not refunded, even if your visa is refused. Make sure your application is complete before you pay.
