A Fast-Track Option for Skilled Professionals
Finland offers a Specialist Residence Permit designed to quickly bring highly skilled workers into the country. This permit uses an accelerated processing track, often aiming for decisions within about two weeks for eligible applicants.
Who Actually Qualifies
Eligibility depends mainly on your role and salary level, not just your job title. Applicants generally need a job requiring specialized expertise, such as IT or technical roles, along with a salary meeting Finland's minimum threshold for this permit category.

From the northern lights in Lapland and Santa Claus Village to Helsinki and thousands of lakes, Finland is a magical place to visit. Finland is part of the Schengen area, so most visitors who need a visa apply for a Schengen visa. This visa lets you stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period, and you can usually travel to other Schengen countries during that time. It is for tourism, family visits and short business trips, but it does not allow you to work or live in Finland.
Who Needs a Visa for Finland
Citizens of EU and EEA countries don’t need a visa to visit Finland. Citizens of some other countries can also visit for up to 90 days without a visa, while many others must apply for a Schengen visa before they travel. If you plan to visit several Schengen countries, apply to Finland only if it is your main destination. Check the visa rules for your nationality on the official Finland Abroad website.
Documents You Need
You need a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months after your trip ends, a completed application form and a photo. You also need travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 that covers illness, accidents and the cost of returning home, valid in all Schengen countries. You must also show that you can pay for your trip, for example with bank statements or salary slips from the last three months. Flight bookings, hotel reservations and, if you are visiting someone, an invitation letter all make your application stronger.
How to Apply Step by Step
First, fill in your application on the official online visa portal of Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and book an appointment at the Finnish embassy, consulate or visa centre in your country. Next, go to your appointment in person, because applications cannot be sent by post or email, and give your fingerprints and photo. Apply no later than 15 days before your trip, and earlier during busy travel seasons. The visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, plus a service fee if you apply at a visa centre.
If Your Visa Is Refused
Common reasons for refusal include missing documents, not enough money for the trip, an unclear purpose of travel, or doubts that you will return home. If your visa is refused, you receive a letter that explains the reasons. You can appeal the decision, or apply again later with stronger documents. Read the refusal reasons carefully and fix them before you apply again.
Can You Visit Other Schengen Countries With a Finnish Visa?
Yes, in most cases. Your total stay in the Schengen area must not be more than 90 days within any 180 days.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Finland Tourist Visa?
Usually up to about 15 working days. It can take longer if other Schengen countries need to be consulted, so apply early.
Is the Visa Fee Refunded If You Are Refused?
No. The visa fee is not refunded, even if your visa is refused. Make sure your application is complete before you pay.
